Solfest 2012: The Actual Return of the Sun

Last week a number of events took place in Longyearbyen to celebrate the return of the Sun, marking the end of the polar winter.  Events included rock and jazz concerts, recitals by school and kindergarten children, presentations given by one of the Frozen Planet produces (Jason Roberts) on the filming done on Svalbard over four years (including all polar bear shots), the famous Ta Sjansen sledge race and closing the week of celebrations was a big party in Huset (the northern most nightclub in the world, in case I haven’t mentioned it already)!  Attending many of the events were the Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (AP) and his colleague Lady Ashton (a High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy) along with many of their media entourage including the BBC.

The sun didn't actually show up on the day we were expecting it, so we had to make do...

ICE BREAKER Party 2012

Last Saturday evening played host to by far the largest party of the semester, the Ice Breaker.  This semesters theme was titled Fairytale which meant that everybody from Shrek and Donkey (not sure if that is a real Fairytale) to Goldilocks and the Three Polar Bears was in attendance!  As well as a good old bit of fancy dress entertainment included a number of games/activities and a show by a really good Ska Band (Ska-li-baba) in which I play drumsJ.
